Islamabad to replace conventional streetlights with LED technology

Owing to the surge in electricity rates and its higher demand,  the administration of Islamabad has decided to replace the currently installed Street Lights with high efficient alternatives which would give higher output at lower cost.
One technology under consideration is the LED (Light Emitting Diode)  Technology which are used as indicator lamps in many devices, and are increasingly used for lighting. Introduced as a practical electronic component in 1962, early LEDs emitted low-intensity red light, but modern versions are available across the visible, ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, with very high brightness.
Another alternative is the “Solar powered street lights” which has been installed at DHA Islamabad on a test basis.  Solar Street lights are aesthetic  with added features of long life, low maintenance, reliable and environmental friendliness. This unique option is provided to effectively handle power issue crises.
Electric street lights are huge energy consumers, costing millions to cities and municipalities around the world whereas Solar Street lights system can provide an excellent alternative to traditional Electric Street lighting, in addition to significant energy and maintenance savings.
